Homeopathy for Dairy Farmers
Many farmers are turning to alternative medicine in the treatment of their dairy herds. There are cost benefits but primarily it results in a more gentle approach improving the overall health of the animals. All the recommendations given below are suggestions which may help. If symptoms persist or are serious, please consult a registered veterinarian or qualified homeopath.
THE REMEDIES
Remedies are supplied in a base of 25% alcohol which will last indefinitely if stored correctly. They should be kept in a cool area out of direct sunlight and away from strong smells or magnetic influences (refrigerators, microwave ovens etc).
PREPARATION OF REMEDIES
TREATMENT BOTTLES:
- Fill up a 200ml sprayer bottle with fresh, clean water.
- Add 40 drops of remedy from the stock bottle.
- Shake the bottle well by banging on a firm surface at least ten times.
- Administer the remedy by spraying directly onto the vulva or muzzle as directed. One full spray is equivalent to one dose.
- Discard the treatment bottle after six weeks.
FOR USE IN THE TROUGH:
- Add two capfuls for the remedy to the drinking trough or dispensing tank weekly as directed.
- Stir the water vigorously with a flat stick to activate the remedy.
- Single dose or infrequently used remedies.
- Available in ready to use spray bottles for direct administration to the animal.
N.B. The homeopathic treatments described in this guide have not been clinically trialled, but with experience have been shown to be safe and effecttive. If the condition persists or does not respond well to treatment please contact your vet for further help and advice.
MASTITIS
SUB CLINICAL MASTITIS:
Udder health
- Add two capfuls to the drinking trough weekly during the milking season and while drying off. Reduces the incidence of clinical mastitis and lowers the somatic cell count generally.
CLINICAL MASTITIS
Udder care
General remedy for animals with clinical mastitis and stubborn cases of high somatic cell count. Use two sprays twice daily for up to four days.
Sulphur Silica and Carbo veg (S.S.C)
- For chronic cases that won't clear up.
INDIVIDUAL REMEDIES
Belladonna
- Sudden onset, red swollen quarter. Sensitive to touch with elevated temperature. Dose every three to four hours until symptoms improve.
Bryonia
Slower onset, quarters hard and hot. Dose every three to four hours until symptoms improve
Belladonna Bryonia & Urtica (BBU)
- Use if picture unclear. Dose every three to four hours until symptoms improve.
Phytolacca
- For stringy, clotted milk. Use after BBU if required. Useful for mastitis where staph or strep is present.
Conium
- Milk is watery and yellowish. Organism involved usually E. coli.
FOOT DISORDERS
STONE BRUISING:
- Arnica 200 use twice daily for two days followed by Ruta grav 30 twice daily for four days.
FOOT ROT:
Prevention
- Foot rot nosode: 10mls in the drinking trough weekly starting three weeks prior to and during peak seasonal period.
Treatment
- Foot rot nosode plus Hepar sulph and Silica 200 twice daily for up to five days.
Chronic resistant cases
- SSC twice daily for up to five days.
PUNCTURE WOUNDS:
- Ledum pal 200 two to three times daily for up to five days.
- Presence of rotting tissue, hot and tender to touch, Pyrogen 30 twice daily for five days.
SKIN DISORDERS
FACIAL ECZEMA:
Prevention
- Facial eczema health: 10mls in the drinking trough weekly starting three weeks prior to and during peak seasonal period
Treatment
- Facial eczema care: two sprays twice daily for up to four days.
RINGWORM
- Bacillinum 200 in the trough repeated again two weeks later.
CHAPS AND SORES ON THE TEATS
- Silica 6 twice daily for seven days. Use in conjunction with teat dipping using Hypercal 1:10.
FERTILITY AND CALVING
NON CYCLING COWS:
- Sepia 1M single dose for older cows
- Pulsatilla 1M single dose for heifers
- Folliculinum 1M as a general remedy.
METRITIS:
- Pulsatilla 30 twice daily for up to fourteen days for metritis which is white/yellow.
Chronic metritis
- Pyrogen 30 twice daily for up to fourteen days. where discharge is whitish and offensive in odour.
CALVING PROBLEMS:
To assist calving:
- Caulophyllum 1M single dose one week prior to calving.
General trauma and post partum recovery:
- Arnica 200 single dose as labour begins.
Retained placenta:
- Pulsatilla 1M twice daily or Caulophyllum 1M twice daily.
History of milk fever:
- Calc phos/Mag phos 30 in trough once a week for eight weeks prior to calving
Separation anxiety
- Ignatia 200 single dose.
