Homeopathic Remedies
"General symptoms" refer to symptoms that affect the whole person e.g. mental & physical restlessness. "Mental symptoms" are symptoms that affect the person's mind state e.g. anxiety or delusions. "Modalities" are conditions which make the symptoms better (>) or worse (<) e.g. restlessness worse at night in bed. Homeopathic remedies are generally taken up to three times a day, for up to a week (this varies greatly depending on what is being treated). As soon as any change in symptoms is noted the remedy should be discontinued. Aconite
Aconite is a remedy used for acute complaints which come on suddenly and with great intensity. It is commonly indicated for colds and painful sore throats especially right at the beginning of the complaint. Restlessness and fear are strong symptoms which are present whenever this remedy is needed.
Apis mellifica
Apis mellifica is a remedy from the honey bee used mainly to relieve inflammation from urticaria and bites characterised by great redness and swelling. The symptoms are often better with cold applications or cool air. It can also be used to treat inflammation of arthritis.
Arnica
Arnica is the most commonly used first aid homeopathic remedy. It is used extensively following injury or shock and is great for helping recovery from bruising or tissue trauma. It is also used topically to ease bruising and muscular aches and pains.
Arsenicum album
Arsenicum album is often the first remedy considered for food poisoning. The state is characterized by great weakness and tiredness. The symptoms seem much worse than they really are and there is anxiety about their health. Colds and flu will also have this weakness and be accompanied by burning discharges or fever better with warmth.
Belladonna
Belladonna is a remedy used for inflammation and fever. During high fevers, the pupils may be dilated and have a glazed over appearance. In severe cases, delirium, anger and oversensitivity. Local inflammations may appear very red and hot. The symptoms come on very suddenly and intensely, often after exposure to a cold draft or wind. It is commonly used to treat children's fevers associated with teething or earaches.
Bryonia alba
Bryonia is a great remedy for dry painful coughs and painful headaches. Dryness of all mucous membrane. Patient lies absolutely still; all symptoms are much worse for the slightest movement. Pains are stitching. They can be "a bear with a sore head" who is irritable and resentful of being questioned or fussed over.
Chamomilla
The main remedy for teething children especially if child has one red cheek. Characterized by over-sensitivity. Pains are intolerable and appear to be out of all proportion. Suited to bad-tempered children who are only quiet when carried and constantly change their minds. They are hot and sweaty (especially the head).
Ferrum phosphoricum
Ferrum phosphoricum is a very useful remedy at the beginning of a cold or fever without any other clear symptoms. Often prescribed for children's ear problems especially if there is some loss of hearing due to congestion.
Gelsemium
Gelsemium is used to help relieve the symptoms of flu especially if there is shivering up and down the spine. It is characterised by paralysis. The remedy is known as the "glass coffin" because although there is complete physical exhaustion, it is coupled with mental alertness. Patient trembles, has aching muscles and heaviness especially of the head and eyes - even the eyelids droop. Good for pre-exam nerves - paralysed with fear.
Hayfever Co 30
This combination contains several remedies commonly used in homeopathy to treat symptoms of hayfever. It is safe and easy to use and will not cause drowsiness or dryness.
Hayfever Itch 30
Simillimum Hayfever Itch 30 is a combination of remedies traditionally used in cases of hayfever where the symptoms are primarily itchy (eyes, nose, roof of mouth).
Hypericum
Hypericum is a remedy with a specific affinity to the nervous system. Useful first aid treatment for lacerated wounds from sharp instruments or any injury to nerve rich areas (e.g. slamming door on fingers or falling on the coccyx). Pains are extreme and shoot along the nerves. Reputed anti-tetanus properties. Known as the "Arnica" of the nerves.
Ignatia amara
Ignatia is used after a major shock or loss often accompanied by sighing and hysterically sobbing. They may have a sensation as though there were a lump stuck in the throat. It can be used to treat fainting and hysteria. Cramps are also a feature of this remedy.
Ledum palustre
Like hypericum, ledum palustre has reputed anti-tetanus properties. It is used to treat puncture wounds (eg those caused by nails) and bites from both animals and insects. The pains are sticking, tearing and throbbing. Area is swollen. Blue and cold but, strangely, feels hot to the sufferer.
Magnesium phosphate
Known as the homeopathic aspirin, magnesium phosphate is very effective if crushed in warm water and sipped. Useful for neuralgia of the face, and toothache with cramping or shooting pains. It and be used to relieve menstrual cramping pain. Those who respond well to this remedy may be sensitive or nervous types who often talk about their pains.
Natrum muriaticum
Natrum muriaticum is a remedy prepared from sea salt and is commonly used for headaches which recur at the same time each day. They may be brought on by overexposure to the sun. Useful remedy for clear runny eyes, noses and also for cold sores. The middle of the lower lip may be deeply cracked. Discharges are like egg white. They may crave salt.
Nux vomica
Nux vomica is a remedy famous for hangovers and overindulgence in rich food. People who need this remedy are often very chilly. Emotionally they tend to be tense, irritable and over sensitive. They suffer from digestive complaints and although they feel much better for vomiting, they find it difficult to do so. They often work and play very hard, surviving on a diet of coffee, alcohol and tobacco, despite the adverse effect it has on them. For best results take the remedy a few hours before going to bed.
Phosphorus
Phosphorus is commonly for irritating coughs and sore throats. Pains may be burning with a desire to sip cold drinks. Very sensitive to all impressions, the senses may become very acute and they may have many fears. Tendency to hypoglycaemia if a meal is skipped. Remedy for small cuts that bleed a lot of bright red blood.
Pulsatilla
Pulsatilla is the main remedy for acute childhood ear infections. With this remedy the symptoms and the patients themselves are very changeable. Emotionally they are moody, tearful and crave company. Children are clingy and whine. Pulsatilla types, are thirstless and are much worse for being in a stuffy room, their mood improves dramatically when they go out in the fresh air. Discharges are thick, bland and yellow green. Complaints may come on after getting wet, chilled feet.
Rhus toxicodendron
No. 1 remedy for sprains and strains. Stiffness coupled with terrible restlessness. Pains usually around joints which ache, feel sore and bruised. The pain gets worse on first moving with a tearing, stitching sensation, but this eases after continued movement provided it is not too strenuous. Patients who need Rhus tox hate damp cold weather. Ruta graveolens
Ruta graveolens is used for injuries to tendons and bone surface (periosteum). Bone feels damaged. Sprained ankles and wrists. Very similar to rhus tox but less restless. Also used for eyestrain from overwork such as too much time over the computer or reading.
Silica
Remedy for forcing out splinters etc. In first aid treatment excellent for forcing foreign bodies out, but beware if you have a pace-maker, grometts, metal pins etc. In acute illnesses suits chilly types, who keep getting infections, which are slow to clear up. Thirsty. Perspire easily.
Sleep 6X
Sleep 6X contains a combination of remedies commonly used in homeopathy to treat the symptoms of sleeplessness or insomnia. It is safe and easy to use, is not habit-forming and will not cause drowsiness the next day.
Sulphur
Warm blooded, wants doors and windows open. Empty sinking feeling in stomach at 11 am. Desires sweets and spicy food. Burning pains. Offensive, corrosive, burning discharges. Itchy. Do not use routinely for skin complaints, instead always seek professional homeopathic advice.
Symphytum
Symphytum (comfrey) is used to promote rapid healing of broken bones, and also for injuries to the periosteum.
Travel remedy
A combination of remedies traditionally used to assist with the symptoms of travel nausea.
Urtica Urens
A remedy for burns and insect bites. Part feels swollen, hot, stinging and itching. Hives relieved by rubbing, urticaria. Similar to apis mel in allergic conditions. Can be used to encourage milk supply in breastfeeding.
