Valerian


ValerianValerian has been used as a medicinal herb since at least the time of ancient Greece and Rome. Hippocrates described its properties, and Galen later prescribed it as a remedy for insomnia.


Synonyms: Valeriana Officinalis, All-Heal.



Parts Used: Rhizome, Root.



Medicinal Uses: Valerian is widely used as a classic herbal remedy for insomnia (often in combination with other herbs, such as Avena Sativa, Passiflora and Scutellaria). It is also used for restlessness, nervousness, hysteria, headaches, and is said to be good for circulation.



Cautions:

Valerian should not be used with prescription tranquilizers or antidepressant drugs.

Discontinue use if heart palpitations or nervousness are experienced.

This herb should not be used by children, or by pregnant or lactating women.

Should not be taken with alcohol.

Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery immediately after taking Valerian.
