Piper Methysticum (Kava)
Kava is an evergreen shrub native to the Polynesian islands of the South Pacific.
Synonyms: Kava Kava, Kava Pepper, Kawa Kawa.
Parts Used: Root.
Medicinal Uses: Kava is used mostly for its sedative properties, which do not seem to impari the user's mental alertness, and is mildly euphoriant. It is also believed to be an antiseptic and anti-inflammatory agent in the urinary tract, and useful for the treatment of headaches. Anxiety, depression, insomnia, restless legs and diminished sex drive may also be benefited by Kava. It is stated to possess powerful painkilling effects, comparable to cocaine and procainamide.
Cautions:
Kava should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation.
Should not be used after taking alcohol, antidepressants, tranquilizers or sleeping pills.
You should avoid Kava if you have Parkinson's disease, as it may worsen muscular weakness and twitching.
This herb is not recommended for people with severe anxiety disorders or depression.
Chronic overuse of Kava can cause a variety of problems, and constant, long-term large doses have been associated with damage to the liver, skin, eyes, and spinal cord.
