People meditate for many different reasons, from reducing stress and anxiety in their lives to developing insight into the nature of the body, mind and reality.


Likewise there are many different kinds or meditation techniques, almost all of them involving focussed attention on a particular object, whether the breath, the body, a mantra or phrase, visualisations and so on.


When the attention is consistently brought back to rest on a particular object the mind becomes still and calm, and a state of wellbeing and peace is often experienced. As one's ability to meditate is developed this state of clarity can become deeper and more sustained.


Most forms of meditation have a relaxing effect on the body, nervous system and mind, which is very beneficial for one's overall state of health.
