Homeopathy in New Zealand

Homeopathy in New Zealand has experienced significant growth over the past decade as more and more New Zealanders discover first-hand the benefits of using homeopathic treatment.

Homeopathy is essentially a natural healing process, providing remedies to assist the patient to regain health by stimulating the body's natural healing forces. It concentrates on treating the patient, rather than the disease.

Homeopathic remedies are highly effective, scientifically proven, extremely cost-effective, non-habit forming, and they are equally effective on humans and animals.

Homeopathic remedies are made from plants, animal products, minerals and (occasionally) conventional drugs or disease matter. Homoeopathic remedies are not tested on animals.

The first recorded homeopath in New Zealand was William Purdie, MD, a graduate of Glasgow, who arrived in December 1849, and settled in Dunedin. The New Zealand Homeopathic Society was founded in 1951.

The practice of homeopathy in New Zealand falls under "common law" as it does in Great Britain. One can practice homeopathy without having a medical license. A decade ago there were 11 professional homeopaths recorded in New Zealand. The New Zealand Council of Homeopaths, which provides a 'stamp of approval' for appropriately qualified homeopaths, now has around 150 members including several medically qualified GPs and qualified veterinarians.
